What Hiring a House Cleaner Taught Me About My Business

I’m outlining the 4 business lessons I learned from my recent experience hiring a house cleaner: word of mouth, transparency, professionalism, and personal touch.

I recently hired a house cleaner for a deep clean and, business junkie that I am, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between the experience and the process of how clients choose which service providers they will work with.

Hear me out—

To start, I did what most people do: I typed in “house cleaner” on Google. I also texted a few friends and neighbors for recommendations. From here, I narrowed down my search to reach out to 4 different cleaners, two from Google and two recommended.

The first company listed their prices online, which was super handy (because it was out of my price range). The second needed to visit my place to give a quote. For something like a house cleaning, seeing the space makes sense, but it’s more time-consuming on my end.

^I get both strategies here: price transparency to save both parties time if they aren’t even within the budget scope vs. an in-person quote to more easily convert the client in person.

The second company came over and gave a quote right there. This face-to-face interaction was smart because it made it easier for them to close the deal on the spot. If I hadn’t been waiting for other quotes, I might have just gone with them right then...

Next, I narrowed it down to two who were recommended by people I trust. Price was important, but knowing they had a good reputation and had worked with friends was the deciding factor; This just reinforced how crucial word-of-mouth is!

Now, it was down between the two who were recommended, which were similar in price. When choosing between these options, how professional and clear they were about their process made a big difference.

One company sent a detailed checklist of what they’d do and communicated the process well; This clarity made me feel more confident in them! It was also a mother-daughter team who would always do the cleaning themselves; This personal touch felt more reliable and trustworthy, like a family-run business.

Here’s what we can take away for our businesses:

  • Word of Mouth: Encourage happy clients to refer you. Personal recommendations are gold.

  • Price Transparency: List your pricing and services clearly (at least give a price range) to save potential clients time and build trust.

  • Professionalism: Be clear and organized in your communication. It sets you apart.

  • Personal Touch: Offer consistent, personal service. Building a strong connection with clients is key.

Seeing the decision-making process from a client’s perspective has given me fresh ideas on improving my own approach—how about you?!

Is it time for you to focus on being a business owner and hire help to help your biz run smoothly?!
